Partnerships For A United Effort
We provide approximately 4-5 programs a month to area schools and occasionally partner with schools outside of our district upon request. Our goal is to provide up-to-date information, evidence-based education and coping skills for our area youth. Programs cover topics such as: gateway drugs, vaping, positive coping skills, prevention measures with an emphasis on goal setting, lessons that choices have consequences, why and how drugs affect the developing brain, identifying how ACE's (adverse childhood experiences) can lead to unhealthy choices, how to be a student leader and more.
Laurel County has two year-round drug take back locations available to the public. Annually, Laurel County ASAP partners with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) to provide collaborative drug take back events. It’s common to associate drug abuse with illegal drugs, but prescription drug abuse is an epidemic nationwide.
In 2018, Laurel Co. ASAP equipped area law enforcement with needle-proof gloves to protect officers from accidental needle stick injuries. Accidental needle sticks would possibly expose officers on the job to blood-borne pathogens. The gloves were purchased through a harm reduction/opiate overdose prevention grant.
In 2019, the Laurel County Agency for Substance Abuse Prevention (ASAP) provided the London Police Department with eight Opt-fit Gas Masks through a grant. The personal protective equipment (PPE) is highly effective when officers come into contact with fentanyl, clandestine drug laboratories, and hazardous material incidents where harmful matter can become airborne.
In 2016, Laurel Co. ASAP equipped area law enforcement agencies with Narcan nasal-spray. Narcan is utilized to save a life from an opioid overdose. As the opioid drug culture evolves, so do local law enforcement agencies and the tools they use. Narcan is available to first responders since the passage of Kentucky Senate Bill 192 in 2015, which also for needle exchange programs in efforts to save lives. Laurel Co. ASAP provides training to law enforcement agencies on the use of the life-saving nasal spray.
