Brief History of Laurel County ASAP

Kentucky Agency for Substance Abuse Policy was created in the year 2000 after being awarded Tobacco Settlement money at the KY General Assembly. Its goal is to reduce the prevalence of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs among youth and adults in KY and to coordinate efforts among state and local agencies in the area of substance abuse prevention. In 2004, KY-ASAP began working with the Office of Drug Control Policy in Frankfort. There are now over 100 local ASAP boards in the state of Kentucky. Some accomplishments that KY-ASAP is known for are smoke-free initiatives within several communities, and financial assistance for drug dogs, bullet proof vests, DARE programs, and Cooper-Clayton smoking cessation programs.
